United States President Donald Trump said he was being "a little sarcastic" when he promised during the campaign that the war between Russia and Ukraine could be over within 24 hours.
"I was a little sarcastic when I said that. What I really meant to say was that I want to solve it and I think I'm going to be successful," Trump said during an interview.
In May 2023, Trump told CNN: "They're dying, Russians and Ukrainians. I want them to stop dying. And I'm going to end it — I'm going to end it in 24 hours."
His special envoy, Steve Witkoff, was in Moscow this week for talks on the US proposal for a ceasefire, which Ukraine accepted.
