Croatian President Zoran Milanovic has canceled the summit of Western Balkan heads of state scheduled to be held in May on the Croatian island of Brijuni.
Milanovic argued that the reason for the cancellation of the summit was the recent statements made by Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić.
"The political statements and actions of the last days and weeks of the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, are in complete contradiction with the goals of the Brdo-Brijoni Process, they damage interstate relations and endanger peace and stability in the region of Southeast Europe. President Milanović is of the opinion that in such circumstances the conditions do not exist and the arrival of the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, to Croatia is not possible," the statement from the Office of the President of the Republic of Croatia states.
The last Brdo-Brijon summit was held in the fall of last year in Tirana, attended by all the presidents of the countries in the region, including Serbian President Vučić.
The Brdo-Brojoni Initiative is a joint forum initiated by two EU countries, Croatia and Slovenia, to assist the countries of the Western Balkans region in their integration into the EU. Both Croatia and Slovenia have identified the region's integration into the EU as a strategic interest.
In addition to the Brdo-Brijoni initiative, which is at the level of the presidents of the states, Slovenia and Croatia have had another initiative at the level of prime ministers, that of the “Brdo Process”. However, the “Brdo Process” has now merged into the Berlin Process initiated by Germany and Austria, together with Croatia and Slovenia, in which other EU countries also participate.
