Iran's Revolutionary Guard released footage that it said showed the moment a US F-35 fighter jet was shot down.
Earlier, the United States announced that an F-35A/B Lightning II aircraft made an emergency landing at a US air base in the Middle East after being hit by fire suspected to have come from an Iranian surface-to-air missile system. The information was reported by CNN, citing two sources familiar with the matter.
According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), the aircraft was on a combat mission over Iranian territory when the incident occurred. Spokesman Tim Hawkins stated: “The aircraft landed safely and the pilot is in stable condition,” adding that the case is under investigation.
If confirmed, this would be the first time Iran has shot down a US aircraft since the conflict began in late February.
Both the US and Israel are using F-35 aircraft in this conflict. The cost of one such aircraft exceeds $100 million.
