FBI investigates former US Counterterrorism Director after criticizing Iran war

Joe Kent, former senior official in the Trump administration, left office amid opposition to Iran policy

The FBI has launched an investigation into the former director of the US National Counterterrorism Center, Joe Kent, for alleged leaks of classified information. The news was reported by CBS News, the BBC's US partner, citing sources close to the investigation.

According to these sources, the investigation began before Kent resigned from his post earlier this week and is being handled by the FBI's criminal division. The FBI itself has declined to comment on the case, while Kent has not yet given a public reaction to the allegations.

Joe Kent, an early supporter of Donald Trump and a decorated U.S. military veteran, announced his resignation on Tuesday. He said he could not support military action against Iran “in good conscience,” arguing that Iran did not pose an immediate threat to the United States. The White House disputed that assessment.

After his departure, former White House deputy chief of staff Taylor Budowich accused Kent of frequently being at the center of leaks of national security information and undermining the chain of command, without providing specific details.

In his resignation letter to President Trump, Kent argued that the escalation of the conflict with Iran had come as a result of pressure from Israel and pro-Israel lobbies in the U.S. These statements were criticized by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), which described them as spreading anti-Semitic stereotypes.

In an interview with podcaster Tucker Carlson, Kent reiterated that he had no information that Iran was preparing an attack on the United States and that it was not close to securing a nuclear weapon. He also stated that the decision to launch the strikes was made without broad debate within the administration.

According to Kent, he had a positive conversation with President Trump before resigning and the relationship between them remains good on a personal level.
