The Trump administration bypassed Congress to expedite billions of dollars worth of arms sales to the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait, as the Gulf allies shoulder the brunt of Iranian retaliation for U.S. and Israeli military actions.
The administration also accelerated the sale of multimillion-dollar aircraft and ammunition support to Jordan.
According to announcements released Thursday by the State Department; "The Secretary of State has determined and provided detailed justification that an emergency exists that requires the immediate sale of defense items to the three nations, thereby waiving the requirements for Congressional review."
Emergency designations were obtained for nearly $8.4 billion in combined arms sales to the United Arab Emirates, including Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM), F-16 ammunition, integrated low-, slow-, and small-size fixed-position unmanned aircraft destruction systems, and Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) long-range discrimination radar.
They were also produced for the sale of $8 billion in low-level air defense and missile sensor radars to Kuwait and $70.5 million in "aircraft and munitions support" to Jordan, which includes spare parts, consumables and accessories, as well as repair and return support.
Iran has targeted U.S. facilities in each of these countries, as well as others throughout the Gulf. It is not clear how quickly the defense systems and supporting equipment will be delivered to each country. In early March, the administration made an emergency decision to bypass Congress and immediately sell 12,000 bombs to Israel.
