Prince William: I will change the monarchy when I am king

The Prince of Wales has warned of changes to the monarchy when he becomes king, during an interview that palace sources say is the most candid Prince William has ever given.

The prince was speaking to actor Eugene Levy in Windsor, about the Apple TV+ show "The Reluctant Traveller."

During the conversation, the actor asked Prince William about his future role as King.

"I think I can safely say that change is on my agenda. Change forever, and I embrace that, I enjoy that change. I'm not afraid of it, that's the part that excites me, the idea of being able to bring about some change. Not too radical, but changes that I think need to happen," said the Prince of Wales.

William arrived to meet the actor on an electric scooter that he said he used to get around the castle grounds.

He said he was a fan of the “American Pie” film series. During the tour of some of the castle’s grandest rooms, Prince William also spoke about his family’s history.

"I think if you're not careful, history can be a real weight and an anchor around you, and you can feel suffocated by it and very limited by it. And I think it's important to live for the present and the present," Prince said.

Prince William stresses the importance of tradition, but says he is not afraid to ask questions to keep the monarchy relevant.

"There are points when you look at tradition and think, is it still fit for purpose today? Is it still the right thing to do? Are we still doing and are we still having the greatest impact that we can have?"

"So I like to question things, that's what I really mean," William says.

And the stress of dealing with cancer issues with both his father and his wife is a recurring theme of their exchanges.

"Family stuff really overwhelms me. You know, the worry or stress around the family side of things, that really overwhelms me," he says.

The prince takes the actor to the Two Brewers pub near Windsor Castle.

It's an informal setting where the Prince seems relaxed, especially when he talks about his family and how the children coped when their mother was unwell.

"We try to make sure we give them the safety and protection they need," he told Levy, adding, "and we're a very open family, so we talk about things that worry us and things that worry us, but you never know exactly what the side effects might be."

"And so, it's just important to be there for each other and reassure the kids that everything is okay."

But Prince William mentions his brother when asked about his experience as a royal growing up with the strict scrutiny his mother and father faced.

"I hope we don't go back to some of the past practices that Harry and I grew up with. And I will do everything I can to make sure we don't go back to that situation," William added.

And as the prince and the actor finish their drinks and wrap up their day together, the prince says he wants to create a world his son would be proud of.

"I know that life is sent to test us too and it can definitely be challenging at times, and being able to overcome that is what makes us who we are. I'm very proud of my wife and father, for the way they've coped with it all last year. My children have done brilliantly too," he said. / Adapted from BBC /
