The American plan for a ceasefire in Gaza, presented today by US President Donald Trump during a press conference at the White House together with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has caused reactions within Hamas.
This 20-point proposal, which aims to end the war between Israel and Hamas, has received Netanyahu's support, but Palestinian officials have criticized it as one-sided, demanding the full text before any decision.
In an exclusive statement to Al Jazeera television network, senior Hamas official Mahmoud Mardawi described the plan as "a text that leans towards the Israeli side."
"What was said at the press conference regarding the plan to end the war is biased towards the Israeli perspective. It is close to what Netanyahu insists on continuing the war ," Mardawi stressed, underlining that Hamas will not give an official response until it receives the full document.
"We need to get this plan in written and clear form before we respond. The plan must reach Hamas and the Palestinian organizations," he added, emphasizing the need for a transparent process.
Meanwhile, another senior Hamas official confirmed to the BBC that the organization has not yet received any official proposal from Trump for a brokered ceasefire. However, he sounded optimistic, saying that Hamas remains " open to considering any proposal that could end the war in Gaza" but on the condition that the agreement protects Palestinian interests, ensures a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and ends the immediate war.
Asked about the organization's weapons, the official stated: " The weapons of the resistance are a red line as long as the occupation continues. The issue of weapons can only be discussed within the framework of a political solution that guarantees the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders."
Trump's 20-point plan, released today by the White House, includes demands such as the release of all hostages within 72 hours, the surrender of Hamas control over Gaza, the deradicalization of the area as a "terror-free territory" and a transitional government.
Trump stressed that if Hamas refuses, Israel will have full American support to "finish off" the militant group, while Netanyahu called the plan "a historic opportunity for peace."
