Thanks to Putin, Europe is more united

Zelensky is preparing fake attacks under the Russian flag against NATO countries to provoke their reaction and cause a continental war...

It could be that, as Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and the now openly pro-Putin media across Europe claim, the drone attacks in the skies of our continent are the result of a collective hallucination. That, as Lavrov and the aforementioned newspapers claim with a certain defiant confidence, Ukraine has developed a system that allows it to divert drones destined for it beyond its borders. And that Zelensky is preparing fake attacks under the Russian flag against NATO countries to provoke their reaction and trigger a continental war.

It may also be that alarm bells are ringing from three European commissioners, Valdis Dombrovskis (Economy), Andris Kubilius (Defense) and Kaja Kallas (Foreign Affairs), from Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, the Baltic states that for decades have had the opportunity to experience what it means to be part of a Moscow-centered system and are now the most exposed to potential invasions from the East.

And it could also be, these are Lavrov's words, repeated by the media most sympathetic to him, that Germany is rearming under the control of a "Nazification" frenzy. Overwhelmed by this, Berlin would pursue "the same goal as Hitler: the defeat of Russia." Various observations could be made about such a historical reconstruction, but this is not the right place.

What is certain is that the countries of Northern Europe are taking the matter seriously and are viewing the intensification of these coincidences with growing suspicion. Yesterday, Poland scrambled its fighter jets and partially closed its airspace. Today, Denmark, after spotting mysterious aircraft circling near military sites, coinciding with an informal summit of European Union leaders, plans to ban all drone flights by next Friday. Polish historian Andrzej Nowak claims that these strange incidents, which have occurred in the skies of Poland, Romania, Estonia, Denmark and Norway in increasingly rapid succession, were and still are intended to sow discord between European countries, within NATO and between our continent and Donald Trump's America.

In fact, Lavrov says he trusts only Trump. He claims that if the US president makes accusations against Putin, he will deny them or arrange for someone to deny them for him. This is because the White House official is the only one who has understood the need to deal with the root causes of the conflict in Ukraine, generated by the illegitimate leadership of Kiev, in order to resolve it. And when Trump claims that Zelensky can even aspire to regain twenty percent of his country that is now considered lost?

"Tricks used in public diplomacy ," is the Russian Foreign Minister's response. Europe, according to him, is alone and divided: sooner or later it will have to submit to a fate that, Putin's right-hand man claims, is sealed.

In fact, if Europe were to rely on Trump's mood swings, things would be more or less as Lavrov describes them. But it could also be that Russia is making the mistake of trusting Joe Biden's successor. A few days ago, Giuseppe Sarcina observed in these pages that Europe has now come to understand that Trump is an "unpredictable variable," one of those that leaves everyone, friends and foes alike, unstable. Therefore, any analysis that includes Trump's behavior, according to Sarcina, becomes a risk, if not a danger.

A risk that even Giorgia Meloni is happy to leave to the opposition. The opposition, and not only the Italian one, will remain to fight against European rearmament and to serve as a platform for Lavrovian theories about the "Nazification" of Germany.

If Putin's aim was to test Europe's resilience, we must admit that the EU has responded adequately so far. And, at this point, we would be willing to assert that if, as Zelensky "predicted", the Kremlin leader wanted to take Italy's pulse, Rome (like any other European capital) would respond calmly, but in full harmony with the rest of the EU. While it was not a matter of chance and coincidence like those mentioned at the beginning, the hybrid war had an effect: it prevented the emergence of disorders on the European continent. Quite the opposite, in fact./ Adapted "Pamphlet" from "Corriere Della Sera"
