Members of this unit secured Milos Vučević, the president of the SNS, who, as alleged, was at the SNS premises in Novi Sad the entire time.

"Wake up Serbia" is the motto of the protests that have spread to almost 30 cities and towns, under the calls of the students, who led them on the night between August 13 and 14.

The protests were accompanied by numerous incidents, fights and clashes not only between demonstrators and police forces, but also groups dressed in black, who have been identified as supporters of Aleksandar Vučić's ruling SNS party.

For the first time, members of the Serbian Armed Forces have also taken to the streets, some of them from the military unit Cobra, who, together with Vučić's hooligans, have attacked the protesters.

Official reports indicate that 7 members of the Serbian Armed Forces were injured during last night's clashes in Novi Sad.

“Members of the Serbian Armed Forces from the special purpose military police unit Kobra, who were performing their regular duties and obligations to secure a specific person, were attacked,” said the Director of the Military Security Agency, Lieutenant General Đuro Jovanić. Meanwhile, it is reported that Second Lieutenant Vladimir Brkušanin used a firearm and fired a bullet into the air, in a “safe direction,” after feeling threatened.

If he had not done this, as he said, the consequences for his colleagues and for him would have been much more severe.

Students called for protests due to violence at demonstrations in Vrbas, where sympathizers and members of the Serbian Progressive Party attacked demonstrators with pyrotechnics, stones, frozen water bottles and tools.

The cause of the unrest during the evening were media reports, according to which the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, first addressed SNS supporters and then led them to Pionirski Park, located between the Presidency building and the National Assembly building, where a camp of government supporters nicknamed "Ćaciland" had been set up for months.

At one point, Vučić addressed a video message from Ćaciland, where his brother, SNS member Andrej Vučić, was also seen.

A particularly strong scene was on John Kennedy Street in New Belgrade, near the SNS headquarters.

Citizens gathered mainly in several places in front of the SNS premises, where they were welcomed by supporters of that party, and the entrance was guarded by the police, in some places also by the Gendarmerie.

However, the incidents with the most injuries occurred in Novi Sad. Speaking in the evening from the MUP headquarters, Vučić characterized them as "they are swimming in blood there," referring to SNS supporters.

The conflict occurred when supporters of the Serbian Progressive Party fired pyrotechnic devices at citizens who had gathered in front of its premises in Novi Sad, on Stražilovska Street.

A member of the Army, namely the special military police unit Kobra, was also injured. Members of this unit secured Milos Vučević, the president of the SNS, who, as alleged, was at the SNS premises in Novi Sad the entire time.

Vučić stated that there are 64 injured supporters of that party in the SNS premises in Novi Sad and added that "there will be no mercy for those who beat and threaten", and that it is currently known that 16 police officers were injured, two of them seriously, one had a completely broken jaw, he added.

He also said that demonstrators in Belgrade "attacked the police and citizens who think differently. "We did not even think of bringing out the army and there is no need. There will be no civil war. I invite them to sit down and talk," Vučić said.

Protests were also held in Niš, where demonstrators demanded the resignation of the minister and the police director, Kraljevo, Gornji Milanovac, Čačak, Leskovac, Pančevo, and in Kragujevac, two groups stood in the streets for hours, one from the SNS led by MP Natasha Jovanović, and the other anti-regime protesters. They were separated by two police cordons, creating a buffer zone. SNS members held Serbian flags in their hands and played patriotic songs. /Adapted from Danas/
