Russian President Vladimir Putin has broken his silence and spoken about the summit he will hold tomorrow with his American counterpart Donald Trump in Alaska, where the focus of the talks will be Ukraine.
But according to a CNN analysis , Vladimir Putin is not traveling to Alaska to end the war in Ukraine.
The Russian president sees the meeting with Donald Trump as a rare opportunity to emerge from international isolation, improve his prestige and redefine US-Russia relations in Moscow's favor, leaving Ukraine in the background.
The meeting, as announced earlier today, will take place at 9:30 p.m. Friday evening (Albanian time). According to Putin's advisor, Yuri Ushakov, the US and Russian leaders will initially meet only in the presence of translators.
For Russian officials and pro-Kremlin commentators, the very fact of such a face-to-face meeting is already a major diplomatic victory for Putin.
"No one is talking about Russia's international isolation or our strategic defeat anymore," prominent military blogger Alexander Kots wrote on his popular social media channel.
For Russian nationalists, the fact that the Russian president will be on American soil, and Alaska in particular, is seen as a symbolic confirmation of the rhetoric that the territory, once part of the Russian Empire and sold to the United States in 1867 for just $7.2 million, “rightfully belongs to Russia.” It is no coincidence that videos of Trump getting flustered at a White House press conference and saying he was going “to Russia” to meet Putin have circulated on Russian social media, with users commenting that he has “finally admitted that it is ours.”
In the rest of the world, however, attention is elsewhere: on the war in Ukraine and whether Moscow is willing to make significant concessions to end it. The White House argues that Trump wants to focus solely on achieving peace, leaving other issues of interest to Russia such as easing US sanctions or possible agreements on the Arctic and technology for later. On Wednesday, after a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders, Trump spoke of “very serious consequences” for Putin if he does not end the war.
