The Australian government today urged its citizens to leave Iran "as soon as possible" due to the protests rocking the country and the "unstable" security situation.
"If you are in Iran, you should leave as soon as possible," the government warned in an updated version of its travel advice.
"Violent protests continue across the country, which are likely to intensify as the security situation is unstable," she added.
The Australian embassy in Tehran had suspended its activities during the conflict between Israel and Iran and "its ability to provide consular assistance to Iran is extremely limited," the government statement added.
"Australians, including those with dual citizenship, are at high risk of arrest," it said.
The protest movement in Iran began on December 28 in the capital Tehran before spreading to other provinces of the country, mainly in the west where the Kurdish and Lor minorities live.
At least 27 protesters "have been killed by gunfire or other forms of violence by security forces in eight provinces," the NGO Iran Human Rights wrote on Tuesday.
Today, on the 11th day of the wave of protests, a demonstration in southwestern Iran turned into armed clashes with security forces, resulting in the loss of two lives and the injury of 30 others, according to the Fars news agency.
The demonstrations taking place these days in Iran constitute the largest protest movement in the Islamic Republic after that of 2022-2023, which was sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini during her detention on charges of violating the strict dress code imposed on women in the country.
