Allies, including France and Germany, are working closely on a plan for how to respond if the United States invades Greenland.

A US military seizure of Greenland from an early ally, Denmark, would cause shockwaves in the NATO alliance and deepen the rift between Trump and European leaders.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said the topic would be raised at a meeting with the foreign ministers of Germany and Poland.

"We want to take action, but we want to do this together with our European partners," he said on French radio.

A German government source said Germany was "working closely together with other European countries and Denmark on further steps regarding Greenland."

A senior European official said Denmark should lead efforts to coordinate a response, but "the Danes have not yet communicated to their European allies what kind of concrete support they want to receive," the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Leaders from major European powers and Canada have gathered this week in support of Greenland, saying the Arctic island belongs to its people.

Johannes Koskinen, chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Finnish parliament, called for the issue to be raised at NATO.

The next meeting of the North Atlantic Council is scheduled for Thursday.

Trump has reiterated in recent days that he wants to take control of Greenland, an idea first expressed in 2019 during his first presidency. He argues that the island is key to US military strategy and claims that Denmark has not done enough to protect it.

The White House said Tuesday that Trump was discussing options for purchasing Greenland, including the possible use of the US military, in a revival of his ambition to control the strategic island despite European objections.

The French foreign minister says a US military operation has been ruled out by Washington's top diplomat.

"I spoke on the phone yesterday with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who confirmed that this was not the approach being followed. He ruled out the possibility of an invasion (of Greenland)," he said.

A US military operation over the weekend that captured the Venezuelan leader had revived concerns that Greenland could face a similar scenario.

A senior US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said this week that Trump and his advisers were discussing a number of ways to acquire Greenland, including buying it.

Greenland and Denmark have said the island is not for sale.

Denmark's Foreign Minister, Lars Lokke Rasmussen, and his Greenlandic counterpart, Vivian Motzfeldt, have requested an urgent meeting with Rubio to discuss the situation.

"We would like to add some nuance to the conversation," Rasmussen wrote in a social media post, adding "men should be replaced by a more reasonable dialogue."

The largest island in the world, but with a population of just 57,000, Greenland is not an independent member of NATO, but is covered by Denmark's membership in the western alliance.

The island is strategically located between Europe and North America, making it a critical location for the US ballistic missile defense system for decades.

Its mineral wealth also aligns with Washington's ambition to reduce dependence on China.

Trump has repeatedly said that Russian and Chinese ships are patrolling the waters around Greenland, which Denmark disputes.

"The image that is being created about Russian and Chinese ships inside the Nuuk Fjord and the massive Chinese investments that are being made is not accurate," Rasmussen told reporters late Tuesday.

Ship tracking data from MarineTraffic and LSEG show no presence of Chinese or Russian ships near Greenland.

The Danish and Greenlandic governments did not immediately respond to a request for comment. /Adapted from Reuters /
