Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said the war in Gaza could end if the hostages were released and the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas surrendered its weapons.
Saar made the statement at a joint press conference with his Danish counterpart in Jerusalem, a day after Hamas said it would release all hostages if Israel agreed to end the war and withdraw its forces from Gaza City. He said this is the only way to end the war.
More than 15,000 people took to the streets of Israel to demand an end to the war in the Gaza Strip and to call on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to agree to a deal to release the remaining hostages.
Families and supporters of hostages still being held by Hamas filled Paris Square in Jerusalem, while others gathered in Tel Aviv. Of the 48 hostages still being held in Gaza, about 20 are believed to be alive.
