Both Elon Musk and Steve Bannon have used the term in the past, sparking strong reactions from Turkey, which considers the use of the name Constantinople instead of Istanbul offensive.
US President Donald Trump, to commemorate the 1821 Uprising, hosted the Archbishop of America, Elpidophoros, at the White House, who presented him with a Holy Cross, comparing it to Constantine the Great, the founder of Constantinople.
One of the most influential American activists of the MAGA movement, Jack Posobiak, published a photo of this special moment, with the caption Constantinople.

This is not the first time that one of the most prominent figures in the MAGA movement has made such a reference to the city's name.
The MAGA movement's connection to the historical and religious symbols of Byzantium is well-known. Both Elon Musk and Steve Bannon have used the term in the past, sparking strong reactions from Turkey, which considers the use of the name Constantinople instead of Istanbul offensive.
And as if to add fuel to the fire that Maga lit, Greek Health Minister Adonis Georgiades shared Jack Posobiak's post, which combined Trump with Istanbul.
Who is Jack Posobiak?
Jack Michael Posobiak III, born December 14, 1984, is an American alt-right activist, television host, and former United States Navy intelligence officer.
He is known for his ardent support for Donald Trump and his MAGA rhetoric on X, where he has millions of followers. He co-hosted One America News Network (OANN) from 2018 to 2021, and is currently a host on Turning Point USA and a contributing editor at Human Events.
Jack Posobiak's brother, Kevin, also a conservative activist, was the originator of the idea to rename the Gulf of Mexico "Gulf of America." He even contributed to the spread of this name in 2025.
In April 2024, Kevin uploaded a photo of the Gulf to X, writing: "Sailing in the Gulf of America. Its correct name will be when 2025 comes."

Jack reiterated the idea to his 3 million followers, stating in December 2024: “The Gulf of Mexico? I think you mean the Gulf of America.”
It is unclear whether Donald Trump was directly influenced by these messages, but what is known is that Posobiak, followed by Trump on X. In these conditions, he contributed to the popularity of the proposal.
In January 2025, Trump signed an executive order renaming the Bay on the first day of his second term. So while he wasn't the first, Posobiak played a key role in getting it approved by the MAGA movement.
Jack Posobiec, however, was one of the journalists who traveled to Europe, along with the new US Secretary of Defense Peter Hegseth.

Posobiak's passion for Istanbul is linked to his ideological positions as a pro-Christian conservative. The fall of Constantinople in 1453 is often cited as a historical example of the defense of Western civilization against external threats, such as Islamism or immigration.
Through his writings and speeches, he uses such examples to reinforce the narrative of a “Christian fortress” that must be defended, reflecting his broader views on identity and tradition. This passion also seems to have influenced other figures in the MAGA movement, such as Steve Bannon, a close Trump ally and former strategic advisor.
Bannon, known for his focus on "culture wars" and defending the Christian West, shares similar views to Posobiak.

While there is no direct evidence that Posobiak inspired Bannon about Istanbul specifically, Posobiak's rhetoric about historical symbols and his influence on MAGA have reinforced such ideas in the broader movement in the US.
Bannon, through his podcast "War Room," has often promoted similar narratives, indicating an ideological convergence. / Adapted Pamphlet from Newsbomb.gr /
