America's 'ironclad' support for Israel has much to do with the insecurity of a declining superpower.
Almost 10 months have passed since Israel has been waging a genocidal war in Gaza. Its military has violated almost every aspect of international humanitarian law in its relentless assault on an unimaginable population.
Israel has denied the Gaza concentration camp the basic necessities of life - food, water, medicine, sanitation, electricity and fuel. And its targeting of civilian infrastructure has rendered most Gazans homeless.
No Israeli military goal calls for the total destruction of Gaza. Killing 40,000 Palestinians – a death toll that could reach 186,000 by some estimates – and wounding many more serves no clear strategic purpose. Nor the systematic and wholesale destruction of Gaza's universities, schools, hospitals and neighborhoods. If Israel wants to occupy and annex Gaza, it would apparently want to inherit something more than a minefield.
And while Israel's behavior seems unreasonable, so does the unconditional support of its closest ally – the US. Washington's "ironclad" support for Israel's genocide has eroded its international authority and claim to uphold the international rules-based system.
Many attribute Israel's great irrationality to the sense of humiliation caused by the October 7 attack by Hamas. This hyper-emotion accelerated the rightward shift of Israeli politics, which now openly celebrates genocidal exploits. Gone is the rhetoric of "peaceful coexistence" and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promises "total victory" instead.
History may provide a clue as to what he might mean by that phrase. It is strikingly similar to the German word Endsieg, which literally translates as "final victory" and describes the full realization of the Nazi regime's genocidal ambitions. The parallels are chilling.
While October 7 may explain Israel's behavior, it hardly illuminates American complicity. Of course, the United States is a reliable Israeli ally and financier, but, until recently, it was always careful to market itself as a staunch mediator between Israelis and Palestinians because of myriad international considerations. That care is gone. The US has unequivocally supported every step of Israel's destructive campaign in Gaza, even as it has rhetorically called for "restraint" or a "ceasefire".
Washington's loyalty is surprising. Since the start of the offensive, President Joe Biden has fully supported Israel every step of the way. But the US and Israel are different societies with often diverging interests. Surely American and Israeli attitudes to war must differ at least a little? Could it be that the Israeli lobby is simply dictating American foreign policy? Groups like the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) are undoubtedly powerful. But they represent only one of many lobbies seeking influence in Washington.
Perhaps the United States sees a personal stake in Gaza? The evidence for this is scant.
Maybe America wants the gas fields off the Gaza coastline? But Washington wouldn't need to aid and abet a genocide to get that gas. A perfectly peaceful, albeit unequal, negotiation would do the trick.
Indeed, none of the above would explain why the US is risking such a reputation not only in the Middle East, but around the world, by supporting Israel's genocide of the Palestinians.
So what if American support for Israel's genocide has nothing to do with Gaza? What if the US is just trying to show who's boss? In recent years, there has been a lot of talk about multipolarity. Many analysts have predicted a world where the US is no longer the global hegemon.
Amid this chatter, the US suffered a defeat and a stalemate with Russia in Ukraine and Syria, respectively. It was quickly withdrawn from Afghanistan, which resulted in the return of the Taliban to power. Various Latin American governments have shifted left, increasing friction within America's "backyard."
Meanwhile, the US's main rival, China, has asserted its influence on the global stage. BRICS – an intergovernmental organization in which Beijing plays a key role – became BRICS+ after expanding to include Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia and Egypt.

Ka pasur disa rezistencë. Aleatët iranianë kanë sfiduar forcat amerikane dhe izraelite në rajon. Teherani nisi një sulm masiv ajror kundër Izraelit për shkak të vrasjes së zyrtarëve të lartë iranianë në Siri. Të njëjtën gjë pritet të bëjë edhe tani për vrasjen e liderit të Hamasit, Ismail Haniyeh.
Hezbollahu gjithashtu nisi një seri sulmesh si hakmarrje për sulmet vdekjeprurëse izraelite në territorin libanez. Ka të ngjarë të bëjë të njëjtën gjë për vrasjen e Fuad Shukr . Në Detin e Kuq, Houthi-t e Jemenit kanë ndërprerë korsitë kryesore të anijeve dhe kanë dërguar drone dhe raketa drejt Izraelit në përgjigje të mizorive të tij në Gaza.
Afrika e Jugut ka ngritur një padi kundër Izraelit në Gjykatën Ndërkombëtare të Drejtësisë (GJND), duke e akuzuar atë për gjenocid; gjykata ka lëshuar një vendim paraprak se veprimet izraelite në mënyrë të besueshme përbëjnë gjenocid. Në mes të shtytjes izraelite dhe amerikane për të hequr financimin e Agjencisë së Kombeve të Bashkuara për Ndihmën dhe Punën për Refugjatët Palestinë (UNRWA), Kina ka mbështetur organizatën dhe ka njoftuar financimin e urgjencës. Ajo gjithashtu ka bërë thirrje për krijimin dhe njohjen e një shteti të pavarur palestinez dhe ka ndihmuar në sigurimin e një marrëveshje uniteti midis Fatahut dhe Hamasit.
Por asnjë nga këto nuk ka qenë e mjaftueshme për të sfiduar burimet në dukje të pakufishme dhe mbulimin diplomatik që SHBA po i ofron Izraelit. Qëllimi i BRICS+ është të kundërshtojë hegjemoninë perëndimore. Megjithatë, Kina, lideri i saj dhe ekonomia më e madhe, nuk është dukur më e guximshme se disa aktorë brenda forcave hegjemoniste si Bashkimi Evropian. Ajo është kufizuar në retorikën mbështetëse dhe disa iniciativa diplomatike, ndërkohë që Rusia ka qenë e heshtur dukshëm dhe India haptazi pro-izraelite.
BRICS+ mund të kishte bërë shumë më tepër në përpjekje për të ndaluar gjenocidin. Ata mund të kishin bërë shumë më tepër për të mbështetur në mënyrë të prekshme popullin e Gazës në momentin e tyre më të dhimbshëm. Por ata nuk e bënë.
America is calling BRICS+'s bluff and exposing it as a paper tiger. With the exception of South Africa and Iran, the bloc simply hasn't lived up to this momentum.
