Keir Starmer's leadership has failed to stop the radical right and is leading the Labour Party towards losing its historic role...
Whatever happens in Westminster, Labour MPs must be clear that Keir Starmer is a political failure. For those on the centre-left, our non-negotiable political imperative, the reason we get out of bed every morning, is to stop Nigel Farage, Robert Jenrick and the rest of the radical right from turning the UK into an ugly imitation of Donald Trump’s America.
“The Labour Party is a crusade or nothing,” said Harold Wilson. Under Starmer’s bloodless leadership, it risks becoming nothing at all.
The failure of Keir Starmer's government is not just one of the normal fluctuations of politics that we can weather with sportsmanship. It could lead to the destruction of the BBC, the National Health Service (NHS) and the Human Rights Act.
Given that elements of the right are already openly discussing what they euphemistically call “repatriation,” the deportation of perfectly legal immigrants, it is not hysterical to imagine that this could also lead to a British version of Trump’s ICE.
Keir Starmer says that for him too, Farage's ban is the reason he gets out of bed every morning.
"We must unite to fight Reform, with everything this movement has," he declared at the recent Labor Party conference.
But the evidence so far shows that Starmer is incapable of doing this. If that doesn't change, he should go.
"The Labour Party is a crusade or it is nothing," said Harold Wilson.
And under Starmer’s lifeless leadership, it risks becoming nothing. It cannot fight Farage alone, as the disastrous polls for Labour and Starmer are proving. Nor can Starmer convince voters who have been divided between the Liberal Democrats, the Greens, the nationalists or Jeremy Corbyn’s “Your Party” to shut up and vote tactically for Labour.
Failing to understand that tactical vote-winning is essential in modern politics has been Starmer and McSweeney’s biggest mistake. They governed as if it were still the 1990s and showed they didn’t understand how the world has changed. They pursued what desperate Labour friends call a “hippie-hitting” strategy.
In old-fashioned politics, bashing hippies made sense. Labour and the Conservatives tried to appease the “average voter.” Election pundits gave them paternalistic names like “Mondeo Man” and “Worcester Woman” and explained that leaders could appeal to them by distancing themselves from the extremes of their party.

Labour should launch targeted attacks on the Conservatives who are moving towards the “re-migration” policies once supported by the National Front. They should speak out loudly about their commitment to clean energy and the jobs it creates, and remind the public that not so long ago, large sections of the right denied the existence of man-made global warming.
On Brexit, having exhausted all other options, Labour should finally consider telling the public the truth about the damage that leaving the European Union has caused.
One reason the Starmer government has done its best to alienate its voters is that our media culture is dominated by right-wing figures who insist that Labour governments can only succeed if they do what the right wants. But the main reason has been McSweeney and Starmer’s inability to think about how the world has changed.
Reflecting on this failure, Ben Ansell, professor of comparative democratic institutions at Oxford, says that rather than trying to convince their friends that they are still on their side, Labour is “focusing all its strategic energy on socially conservative voters who are not interested in voting for the party”.
Labour played Farage's game by emphasizing the importance of immigration and failed to inspire its supporters or sow division on the right by emphasizing the need for tax increases to rebuild public services.
Maybe now that McSweeney is gone, Starmer will be like a prisoner released from his cell. Maybe he will emerge as the leader who can galvanize the majority against the right in this country. Maybe he will realize that, to win again, Labour must stop bashing hippies and start embracing them.
But if he doesn't, and I say this as someone who voted for him and admired him, Starmer must step down. The stakes are very high. /Adapted from The Spectator /
