Why are the elections in Germany the most important for Europe?!

Germany goes into these elections more polarized than four years ago. Merz sees the solution in revitalizing the economy and controlling migration. Industry sees opportunities in military investments, writes Auron Dodi.

The front-runner for German chancellor, Friedrich Merz of the CDU, has called these "elections of fate" in the face of "the tectonic shift of the world's political and economic centers of power." He has also called them "one of the last opportunities to solve problems before populists (win) a majority."

In this context, some foreign observers see these German elections as the most important elections in Europe.

The elections are taking place in an atmosphere where the issue of migration has been catapulted into the forefront, largely due to the attacks. The perception of migration in particular has also led to the strengthening of the AfD, a party with anti-foreigner tendencies.

The centrist parties no longer represent the entire political spectrum as they used to. But polarization in Germany has not reached the proportions of other European countries, it is far from the situation in the United States. Consensus continues to be preferred by political forces in Germany.

The trend of recent election polls

The general trend of the latest polls, sees today the first CDU/CSU, a center-right party, reaching 30.1%. The second comes the Alternative for Germany, AfD, a partially ultra-right party, at 20.2 percent. The third is the SPD, the center-left social democratic party, at 15.3%; The Greens, a party with a focus on the environment and climate, are at 13.2. %; The Left Party, a partially ultra-left party, reaches 6.8%.

Meanwhile, the other parties, the liberal FDP and the Sara Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW), according to the trend of the polls, are not expected to exceed 5%, the threshold to enter the Bundestag.

Polling forecasts for the main parties have barely changed in the past month. However, more than a third, or 3.9%, of voters are still undecided about who they will vote for.

The government can be formed by the party or party coalitions that reach half of the seats in the Bundestag, i.e., that reach at least 316 seats.

Preferred partner of the CDU/CSU

Asked about his preferences, CDU chairman Friedrich Merz recently replied: "Maybe with the SPD, maybe with the Greens. I have great doubts about the FDP."

According to polls, a coalition between the CDU/CSU and the Social Democrats, SPD, is the most likely. Such a coalition has governed Germany four times since World War II.

But three more parties may be needed to form a government. So it is possible that the Greens will also be asked to be on board.

Me preferencën e parë zgjidhet kandidati direkt i zonës elektorale.

Merzi do ta forcojë Gjermaninë.

The issue of security has generally been at the forefront of Merz's election speeches. He recently declared that "it is crucial that we are able to defend ourselves." He sees 2% of GDP on defense as the minimum that Germany should spend. For this reason, he does not rule out reforming the debt brake in the German constitution. This would allow borrowing to invest, as Germany would not be forced to spend only as much as it produces in a year.

Given the geopolitical situation, an additional defense budget could be one of the first steps of the new government, especially after the new shock in relations with the US, on which Germany has relied for its security since World War II.

Some institutions, such as the Munich-based Ifo Institute for Economic Research, expect a shift in the structure of German industry towards the defense sector. Some analysts see the German arms industry in a boom.

The AfD's expected role in German politics

At the federal leadership level, the AfD is not expected to play any role. All parties have ruled out cooperation with it. But the AfD's greater presence in the Bundestag and in forums and rhetoric could have the effect of normalizing the radicalization of some people in Germany.

Despite the skepticism of critics, Merzi has repeatedly emphasized his distance from the AfD. This despite his bold step of considering a joint vote with the AfD on migration in the Bundestag. Merzi says that a collaboration with the AfD would mean the end of the CDU.

Washington's support for the AfD, the demand to lift the "cordon sanitaire" against the AfD, seems to have strengthened the distancing from the AfD in the CDU.

Merz's goal is for the AfD to fall below 5% and not enter the Bundestag in the future. To do this, he aims to solve the migration problem, e.g. by deporting and pushing back illegal immigrants at the border. And to stimulate the economy, e.g. by cutting taxes and bureaucracy.

This is to be hoped for, as the number of people disillusioned with traditional politics who are voting for the AfD has increased. It also seems that many young people and many East Germans are voting for the AfD.

Preliminary election results

On Sunday, at 5:45 p.m., a first preliminary result for the vote is expected. However, the parties usually get the trend from 12 p.m. If there are any surprises from the voters, this will become clear later./DW
