Russian President Vladimir Putin held a telephone conversation with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, the Kremlin announced in an official statement. The discussions focused on developments in Ukraine, the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East and bilateral cooperation in the energy sector.
According to the Kremlin, Vučić expressed gratitude for the continued stable supplies of Russian gas, calling them essential for Serbia's energy security in the context of the global crisis and rising energy prices.
"The leaders discussed in detail the situation around Ukraine and the current large-scale escalation of the conflict in the Middle East," the official statement said.
The two presidents also reviewed the progress of cooperation in the energy sector and preparations for the next meeting of the Russian-Serbian Intergovernmental Committee for Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation, scheduled to be held in April.
The Kremlin announced that Vučić also shared his assessments of the situation in the Balkans.
Russia remains Serbia's main gas supplier, covering up to 90% of its needs. Energy cooperation between the two countries has deepened since 2008, when Russian state-owned company Gazprom bought a controlling stake in Serbian oil company NIS.
However, in early 2025, the United States imposed sanctions on NIS due to Russian involvement. As a result, Gazprom transferred its shares to a Hungarian-Emirati consortium.
Despite these developments, Moscow and Belgrade continue to cooperate in the gas field. In March 2026, the parties signed a new short-term contract for gas supplies, while the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Serbia with the participation of the Russian company Rosatom also remains under discussion.
