A potential US ground offensive targeting Iran's main oil hub, Kharg Island, could backfire and lead to increased casualties, a military expert has warned.
"I think the Iranians could probably sit back and attack the Americans on Kharg Island, and the casualties would mount," Malcolm Davis, a senior analyst at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, told CNN's Ben Hunte.
His comments come as US President Donald Trump sends mixed signals on the conflict, praising progress towards peace while also weighing a possible move on the fortified island, which handles 90% of Tehran's oil exports.
Iran has taken precautions by setting traps and moving additional military personnel and air defenses to Kharg Island in recent weeks.
Davis also warned that the US could carry out its anticipated ground invasion within the next week, further damaging prospects for diplomatic progress.
"I think talks about peace negotiations and an end to the war are simply not credible, at best, very premature," he said.
"Within a week or so, you'll probably see ground forces enter the battle, so there's no way to say this is heading towards a truce or peace."
