Russia will confiscate assets belonging to unfriendly European Union states if the bloc "steals" frozen Russian funds to fund Ukraine, an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin said.
The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced that the institution she leads is working on a proposal to take some of the benefits derived from frozen Russian state assets to help Ukraine rebuild when the war ends.
Vyacheslav Volodin, chairman of the State Duma, the lower house of the Russian parliament, said Moscow would retaliate in a way that would be more costly for the bloc if the EU took action against Russian assets, most of which are held in Belgium. .
"A number of European politicians, led by EC President Ursula von der Leyen, have once again started talking about stealing frozen Russian state funds in order to continue the militarization of Kiev. Such a decision would require a symmetrical response from the Russian Federation. In that case, many more assets belonging to unfriendly countries would be confiscated ," said Volodin, Putin's close ally.
Von der Leyen stated that the value of Russian assets was 211 billion euros and recalled that the bloc has decided that Russia should pay for the reconstruction of Ukraine.
Volodin said that European politicians are considering this move "in an effort to keep their jobs and because of the poor financial situation that their countries have been in."
