Putin signs the conscription decree calling up 150,000 men for military service

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree for the regular spring conscription campaign, calling 150,000 citizens into compulsory military service, a document published on the Kremlin's website on March 31 said.

All men aged 18 and over are required to complete one year's compulsory service or equivalent training during higher education.

In July last year, the Lower House of the Russian Parliament voted to raise the maximum age of conscripts from 27 to 30. The new legislation came into effect on January 1 this year.

Conscription has long been a sensitive topic in Russia, where men try to avoid conscription during two conscription campaigns a year.

Legally, conscripts cannot be deployed to fight outside Russia, and they were excluded from the 2022 mobilization, when at least 300,000 people with previous military training were gathered to fight in Ukraine. However, some recruits were reported to have been mistakenly sent to fight in Ukraine.

In September, Putin signed off on recruiting 130,000 people during the fall campaign, and last spring's recruiting campaign Russia planned to recruit 147,000 people.

The regular recruitment drive comes as Russia continues its invasion of Ukraine, which Moscow launched in February 2022. /REL
