In his first public appearance of the new year 2026, Russian President Vladimir Putin appeared at the Kremlin to present credentials to new ambassadors accredited to Moscow. In a speech loaded with messages for the Western world, he once again articulated the Kremlin's vision for the future of the war in Ukraine and the international order.
“ We believe that the time has come to return to a serious dialogue on resolving the conflict in Ukraine – and the sooner this happens, the better for everyone ,” Putin said. But he immediately added in a critical tone: “ Not everyone is ready for this. Neither Kiev, nor the capitals that support it. However, we hope that a moment will come when they will understand this vital need. Until then, Russia will continue to persistently pursue its objectives .”
The Russian president presented the war as a direct consequence of “ disrespect for Russia’s legitimate security interests ,” noting that peace “ does not come by itself, but is built every day through effort, responsibility, and conscious choice .”
He issued another strong message to the West: “ The security of one country cannot be built at the expense of another. The time has come for a new international system where countries do not forcefully dictate how others should live. ”
Putin also stressed that Moscow is ready to build relations with any country that is open to cooperation and supports the role of the United Nations in managing global affairs. According to him, "chaos, anarchy and lack of resources are hitting dozens of countries," while diplomacy is being replaced by "unilateral and dangerous actions."
Regarding relations with Europe, he stated: " Moscow is ready to resume dialogue with European countries - a dialogue that has been interrupted through their fault. Russia remains committed to communication built on respect for national interests and legitimate security concerns ."
