Russian President Vladimir Putin held phone calls with four key leaders of Persian Gulf countries on Monday, warning of the risk that US and Israeli attacks on Iran could escalate into a wider regional conflict.
After the conversation with Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the Kremlin stated that "both sides expressed serious concern about the real risk of expanding the conflict zone, which has already affected the territories of several Arab countries and carries catastrophic consequences."
Putin stressed the need for diplomacy to address what he called an “extremely dangerous situation.” For his part, the Saudi prince said Moscow could play a stabilizing role, given its good relations with both Iran and the Gulf states.
Russia has repeatedly condemned the US-Israeli attacks and the assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The Kremlin also announced that Putin spoke with the president of the United Arab Emirates, Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. According to the official statement, the two leaders stressed “the necessity of stopping hostilities and returning to a political and diplomatic process.”
In another phone call with Qatar's Emir, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, both sides expressed concern about the risk of the conflict in the Middle East escalating and the possibility of third countries getting involved. The Russian president also spoke with the king of Bahrain, as part of diplomatic efforts to stem the escalation.
Moscow's diplomatic moves show that Russia is trying to position itself as a mediating factor in a crisis that is deepening tensions throughout the region.
