Putin rewards Trump's peace with missiles and drones

EU leaders line up like schoolboys before Trump, as Russia rewards talks with biggest attack of the month in Ukraine: Is this peace, or another Helsinki 2.0 bargain?

In Washington, the most powerful leaders of the Western world gathered to talk about "peace" in Ukraine.

With big words and phrases prepared by PR staff, they tried to raise hope that after more than three years of war, something was changing. But what really happened was a political show, where Donald Trump brought back the old American style; "I command, you obey", while Europe remained silent like a student caught in a mistake.

At this peace summit, no one talked about troops, about concrete military support, or about any real guarantees.

Instead, Trump announced that the US would not send troops to Ukraine, and asked the EU to pay for it. A cynical way of saying that America no longer intends to wage war for others, but will use “peace” as a political weapon in the campaign and a means of pressure on allies.

At his side, Volodymyr Zelensky, once an international hero, stood in the most difficult position: a leader who must pretend to believe in promises because there is no alternative. Ukraine, tired of war and exhausted by deprivation, wants peace, but not just any peace. And at this crucial moment, comes the brutal response from Moscow: the largest airstrike of the month, with 270 drones and dozens of missiles hitting refineries, power plants and populated areas in central Ukraine. For Putin, this was the clearest way to say that any “peace process” that takes place without him is a farce. He doesn’t speak at summits, he speaks with explosives.

The irony is shocking: while Western leaders sign declarations of cooperation and hope, Ukrainian citizens hide in shelters from Russian missiles. While documents are signed about Ukraine's future in Europe, its energy is destroyed by deliberate attacks on critical infrastructure.

This is not peace, this is trade, a bargain, where people's lives become currency in the grand accounts of geopolitics.

For Albania and the Balkan region, this is a clear signal: if a country like Ukraine with nearly 40 million inhabitants, which has fought to defend Western values, is treated like this, then what protection will a small country have when faced with external threats?

Will there ever be a "summit" for the Balkans, if we ever become part of a conflict? Or will we hear the same dry words, while foreign planes fly over our heads?

In the end, the only peace being offered today is a false peace, a peace that serves the US presidential election and the cold interests of the EU more than real security on the ground. And while the world tries to convince itself that war can be stopped with words, Putin continues to speak the language he understands best: that of force./ Pamphlet
