Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed Moscow as the venue for a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky, international media report.
This was revealed to the media by two sources familiar with the phone call between Donald Trump and the Russian president.
"Putin mentioned Moscow" during their call on Monday, one of the sources told AFP, adding that Zelensky replied "no".
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has ruled out sending US troops to help implement a possible peace deal in Ukraine, despite expressing willingness to the idea yesterday.
In a phone interview on Fox News this morning, Trump was asked: "What kind of guarantees do you think you have, going forward, after this Trump administration, that there won't be American soldiers on the ground protecting the (Ukrainian) border?"
"Well, you have my security and I'm president," Trump replied.
A White House official confirmed Tuesday that Trump is "determined" not to send U.S. troops to defend Ukraine. But, the person added, there are other ways the U.S. can ensure Kiev is protected.
The official added that talks about commitments to security guarantees are ongoing and the specifics of what that would look like will continue to be the subject of negotiations between the U.S., its European allies and Ukraine. Foreign leaders want to know what resources Trump will commit to ensuring that, once a potential peace deal is reached, Russia is unable to regroup and pursue more territory in the future.
