Slovakia's Prime Minister Robert Fico has said his country will oppose a proposed plan to supply Ukraine with $100 billion worth of American weapons, financed by European Union countries, in exchange for US security guarantees for Kiev.
In a video published on social media, after the end of a European Council videoconference, Fico called this proposal "a bitter joke."
" Not even in my wildest dreams can I imagine Slovakia buying weapons from the US to send them for free to the Ukrainian front ," he said.
The Slovak prime minister also added that he remains "skeptical" about supporting new sanctions against Russia if the negotiations do not yield the expected results. He stressed that one of the conditions for ending the war is that "Ukraine does not become a member of NATO."
" Since the beginning of the war, I have clearly spoken out against Ukraine's membership in NATO and have been severely criticized for this. But my position has not changed. Moreover, without an open discussion on territorial changes in Ukraine, there can be no progress ," Fico said.
However, the head of the Slovak government said he supports Kiev's ambition to join the European Union, if Ukraine meets the necessary criteria.
