"Stay indoors", the strange recommendation for Chinese people weighing

Widespread typhoon-level storms are expected to hit northern China from Friday to Sunday, prompting Chinese state media to issue a bizarre advisory urging people weighing less than 50 kilograms to stay indoors.

Due to adverse weather conditions, Beijing is postponing major sporting events, closing parks and suspending dozens of rail services.

The region's 22 million residents have been warned against non-essential travel, while those weighing less than 50kg have been told they can "easily hide".

Dozens of flights have been cancelled as winds of up to 93 miles per hour are expected to sweep across China's northern provinces.

Strong winds carrying sand and dust from Mongolia are normal at this time of year, but climate change has made weather events more extreme.

Beijing issued its first orange storm alert in 10 years for this weekend, the second highest of four levels.

Temperatures in the capital are expected to drop by 12 degrees Celsius on Saturday and forecasters warned that wind speeds could rival or exceed April records dating back to 1951.

Heavy snowfall is expected to blanket parts of China's Inner Mongolia region as well as northeastern China, while southern China could be hit by the strongest hailstorms so far this year.

Natural disasters in China caused direct economic losses of 9.3 billion yuan ($1.27 billion) in the first two months of 2025, according to the Ministry of Emergency Management.
