Russian President Vladimir Putin has described his visit to Alaska as "useful and timely," stressing that the conversation with Donald Trump was "frank and contained," according to the Russian state news agency TASS.
Putin added that Russia "respects the US position" on the conflict in Ukraine, a statement that seems more like diplomatic language than a real signal of compromise.
In essence, the Kremlin leader has not budged from his hard line: earlier he spoke of the need to eliminate the “root causes” of the war. This formulation, which at first glance sounds neutral, is in fact Moscow’s political code for not giving up on the red lines, namely control over the eastern territories of Ukraine, neutralizing Kiev, and preventing NATO’s expansion eastward.
Putin's statements after the meeting with Trump reinforce the belief that Moscow is ready to negotiate only on secondary aspects, such as freezing the front in some areas, but has no intention of making concessions on fundamental issues. The "root causes" are essentially the rejection of full Ukrainian statehood within the current borders and the reestablishment of a new sphere of Russian influence in Eastern Europe.
Putin used the Alaska visit to emerge from international isolation and establish Trump as a direct negotiator with the West. In fact, his rhetoric of a “sincere dialogue” signals a soft diplomatic language, while on the ground Russian troops continue to advance in the Donbas.
