Wagner's rebellion exposes Russia's deep weaknesses

The rebellion of the Russian mercenary group Wagner and its leader Yevgeny Prigozhin against Russia's leadership as the war in Ukraine unfolds has exposed "deep weaknesses" in Russia's security system, Western experts have said.

Reenactment could also weaken the morale of Russian soldiers on the war front, according to a report published by the Washington-based Institute for War Studies.

"Prigozhin's rebellion has revealed deep weaknesses in the Kremlin and the Russian Ministry of Defense," the report said.

According to the report, the deal negotiated by the Belarusian leader, Alexander Lukashenko, that Prigozhin should go to Belarus, offers only a short-term solution.

The Institute has estimated that Wagner's mercenaries could reach the outskirts of Moscow, if Prigozhin would allow them.

This action, it is said in the report, highlighted the lack of reserves of the Russian army.

"Prigozhin's rebellion has illustrated that the Russian forces are lacking in many aspects and there is a good chance that this situation will lower the morale of the Russian personnel in Ukraine."

Ukrainian forces can use this knowledge as they "attempt to breach Russian defenses."

The Institute has also said that with the agreement brokered by Lukashenko, Wagner will certainly not exist as an independent group headed by Prigozhin, but some parts will join the Ministry of Defense.

Among other things, the Institute has assessed that the idea of the Belarusian leader stopping the military advance towards Moscow constitutes contempt for the Russian president, Vladimir Putin./ rel
