Power supply restored to Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant

The Russian-installed management of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine announced that it has restored the “Ferrosplavnaya-1” electricity transmission line, thus ensuring the power supply to the facility.

"All systems and equipment at the ZNPP are operating normally," said a statement published on the plant's official Telegram channel.

The power line was repaired thanks to a temporary local ceasefire, which was brokered by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and announced on Friday. The ceasefire was intended to allow workers to carry out necessary repairs without risk.

However, the situation remains tense. Hours after the initial incident was reported, Russia's state nuclear energy corporation Rosatom accused Ukrainian forces of deliberately violating the ceasefire by carrying out a drone strike. According to Rosatom, the attack left at least three people injured.

The Zaporizhia nuclear power plant is the largest in Europe, with six reactors. It is currently not generating electricity due to the war, but it continues to urgently need external energy to cool the nuclear fuel and prevent it from overheating. Any interruption in the power supply is considered a serious nuclear safety risk.

The IAEA has repeatedly warned of the risks posed by the situation in Zaporizhzhia, stressing the need for sustained protection of the plant and preservation of its physical integrity. Developments on the ground continue to be closely monitored by international organizations, as any incident at this plant could have serious consequences for regional and global security.
