It could take at least six months to restore normal oil and gas flows from the Gulf region, the head of the International Energy Agency said.

The current situation in the Middle East, where the Strait of Hormuz remains virtually blocked by Iran, could lead to the most severe energy crisis in history, Fatih Birol told the Financial Times.

"It will take six months for some places to be functional, others much longer ," he said.

Politicians and markets are underestimating the extent of the disruption, Birol added, which has been exacerbated by Iranian attacks on energy infrastructure in the Persian Gulf in recent days.

Recall that the Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important trade routes in the world, with about a fifth of global oil exports passing through this waterway.

Iran has previously threatened to attack or set fire to any ship attempting to use the strait, leading to a near-complete decline in maritime traffic and driving up oil and gas prices.

Earlier this month, the IEA announced that its members would release a record 400 million barrels of oil from their reserves in an effort to combat the supply problem.
