NATO temporarily suspends mission in Iraq. About 600 troops withdraw as tensions rise in the region
NATO has temporarily halted its training activities in Iraq and withdrawn some of its personnel stationed there.
The mission, which has been operating since 2018, has been affected by recent developments in the Middle East. The decision is related to the worsening security situation following recent attacks that have increased tensions in the region.
About 600 troops have been withdrawn, while Alliance authorities consider this a temporary measure. The goal remains to guarantee the security of international troops deployed in Iraq.
In this context, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani held a communication with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. He called for avoiding escalation and stressed the importance of diplomatic solutions.
Authorities in Baghdad have called on NATO member countries not to become directly involved in the conflict.
