The Israeli military announced today that it had killed Esmail Ahmadi, one of the top intelligence figures in the Iranian paramilitary Basij force, during an attack carried out earlier this week in Tehran.
According to a statement from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Ahmadi headed the Basij's intelligence division and was considered a key figure in the organization's operations. The confirmation comes days after the strike, which Israel had earlier said had also killed the organization's leader, Gholamreza Soleimani.
Iranian authorities have previously confirmed Soleimani's death, but have so far not reacted to the claim of Ahmadi's elimination.
In its statement, the IDF emphasizes that Ahmadi played "a central role" in planning and carrying out attacks that Israel considers terrorist, as well as in suppressing domestic protests in Iran over recent months.
The Israeli military warned that it will continue operations against what it describes as the leadership structure of the Iranian regime, hinting at a possible escalation of tensions in the region.
