"Russia will take revenge", Medvedev warns: They are our enemies

Russia's former president, Dmitry Medvedev, said on Saturday that Moscow will seek "revenge" for heavy sanctions imposed on it by the West.
On Friday, the United States and the European Union imposed new sanctions on Russia ahead of the two-year anniversary of Moscow's invasion of Ukraine and the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny in a Russian prison.

"The reason for the sanctions is clear: The worse it is for Russian citizens, the better it is for the Western world," Medvedev said on social networks.

"We just have to remember that and get revenge whenever we can. They are our enemies," he added.

The European Union yesterday presented the 13th package of sanctions against Russia, a day before the second anniversary of the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

"Today, we are further tightening restrictive measures against Russia's military and defense sector," EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said in a statement to the media.

On the same day, the president of the United States, Joe Biden, announced that more than 500 new sanctions will be imposed against Russia.

"These sanctions will target individuals associated with Navalny's imprisonment, but also Russia's financial, defense, procurement networks and sanctions evaders in other countries," Biden said.

Navalny, a vocal critic of the Kremlin, died on February 16 under suspicious circumstances in an Arctic prison in northern Russia. He was serving a lengthy sentence on extremism charges that many have described as politically motivated.

"They [sanctions] will ensure that Putin pays an even higher price for his aggression abroad and oppression at home," Biden said.

According to Biden, Putin made "miscalculations" with the launch of the invasion of Ukraine.

As a result of the Russian aggression, tens of thousands of people have been killed and many cities have been destroyed.
