After meeting with Ukraine's president, US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called on the Speaker of the House of Representatives to help pass a stalled bill that would include aid to Kiev in its fight against Russia.
Senator Schumer is part of a delegation of five Democratic senators who held talks with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv on the eve of the second anniversary of the start of the Russian aggression.
"President Zelensky and American and Ukrainian officials have said that without this aid Ukraine would lose the war," Senator Schumer said at a press conference.
"We're open to direct talks with Speaker of the House Mike Johnson. We're going to do everything we can to show him what we've learned and pressure him to do the right thing."
The Senate last week approved a bill to allocate $95.34 billion in military aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. President Joe Biden has urged the House of Representatives to pass it, but Congressman Johnson sent members on a two-week recess without putting the bill to a vote.
Mike Johnson is an ally of former Republican President Donald Trump and voted against aid to Ukraine before becoming Speaker of the House.
President Zelenskiy said on Friday evening that US aid is "fundamental to our defense both in terms of its content and the message it sends to the world". /VOA
