Russia is in the process of equipping new nuclear submarines with hypersonic Zircon missiles, the head of Russia's largest shipbuilder, Alexei Rakhmanov, said on Monday.
" Multipurpose nuclear submarines of the Yasen-M project will be equipped with the Zircon missile system on a regular basis ," Rakhmanov said in an interview with the state news agency RIA.
" The work in this direction has already started ", emphasized Rakhmanov, the chief executive of United Shipbuilding Corporation.
The Yasen-class submarines, also known as Project 885M, are nuclear-powered cruise missile submarines that were built to replace Soviet-era nuclear attack submarines as part of a program to modernize the military and navy.
Zircon sea-based hypersonic missiles have a range of 900 kilometers, and can travel at the speed of light, making it difficult to defend against them.
Russia's president, Vladimir Putin, said earlier this year that Russia will begin a massive supply of Zircon missiles as part of the country's efforts to strengthen its nuclear forces.
The Russian frigate Admiral Gorshkov, which tested its missile capabilities in the western Atlantic Ocean earlier this year, has already been equipped with Zircon missiles.
