Governor Josh Green told CBS News that search and rescue teams in Hawaii are finding the bodies of 10 to 20 victims a day.
The death toll from wildfires rose to 96 on Sunday, making the latest disaster in Hawaii the worst in the United States in more than a century.
According to Governor Green, it will take more than 10 days to know the exact number of victims. Almost the entire town of Lahaina has been destroyed by fire.
"There's nothing left to see but destruction," Green told CBS.
He said that all the inhabitants of Lahaina, a country with 12,000 inhabitants, fled or suffered from the fire.
As of Saturday, officials said only 3 percent of the territory in Lahaina had been tracked.
Teams from other countries have been sent to help, in order to identify the victims.
The deadly Lahaina fire is still active, though largely contained, according to Maui County authorities.
How the fire started is not known, although it is believed to have been fueled by the hot winds of nearby Hurricane Dora.
