At the informal EU summit in Budapest, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed his willingness to work with the next US President Donald Trump. Scholz emphasized that Europe should strengthen cooperation in the security sector.
"We must work together as the European Union, as Europeans, to do what is necessary for our security. This will be successful if everyone plays their part," he said.
The German chancellor underlined that this year, for the first time in decades, Germany was spending more than 2% of its gross domestic product (GDP) on defence.
" Others want to do this and will follow the example ", he said.
Scholz held a phone conversation with Trump on Wednesday, shortly after his victory in the presidential election, offering Trump a reliable partnership.
"Europe will continue to work in August with the next American president ," he said after the informal meeting of EU leaders in Budapest.
