US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin called the rapid overthrow of the Syrian regime surprising to "the entire international community."
In a statement from Japan, Austin warned that ISIS may try to "take advantage" of the situation on the ground.
" I think the entire international community was surprised to see that the opposition forces moved as quickly as they did. I think everyone expected to see a much tougher resistance from Assad's forces. …. In terms of what has happened, certainly as this unfolds, there is a potential that elements in the area like ISIS could try to take advantage of this opportunity and regain capabilities ," Austin told traveling press while aboard the USS George Washington in Japan.
Austin noted the significant U.S. strikes that took place over the weekend on ISIS targets and said the U.S. is still assessing the results.
" I think we will find that we have been quite successful ," he said.
