Relations between Ukraine and the United States are deteriorating. US President Donald Trump accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of trying to "back out" of signing a critical minerals deal with the United States.
In the wake of this, Trump threatened Zelensky that if he withdraws from this agreement, he will face big problems.
"He's trying to pull out of the rare earths deal, and if he does that, he's going to have some problems, big problems. He wants to be a member of NATO, but he's never going to be a member of NATO. He understands that ," Trump told reporters Sunday aboard Air Force One.
The White House has been pushing Kiev to accept the deal, which would see Ukraine share its rich mineral deposits with the US.
Trump has characterized the deal as a repayment for billions in aid the US has given to Ukraine over the past three years.
Last week, the two countries issued a joint statement saying they had agreed to conclude a comprehensive agreement as soon as possible.
The development was a sharp turn from the widespread public outcry from Trump and Zelensky in the Oval Office last month, when their meeting threw the deal into oblivion.
Zelensky, for his part, has said that Kiev's lawyers need to review the draft agreement before he can say more about the US offer.
