Tensions between China and Taiwan continue to be high. China on Friday warned of war on Taiwan and said it would step up countermeasures until "full reunification" is achieved, as Chinese forces conducted military exercises around the self-ruled island.
Warships and warplanes circled Taiwan on the second day of drills that Beijing said were a test of its ability to seize the island, days after the new president was sworn in.
China's military began two days of war drills on Thursday morning, surrounding democratic Taiwan with naval vessels and warplanes as it vowed that the blood of the island's "independence forces" would flow.
The drills began three days after Lai Ching-te took office and delivered an inauguration speech that China denounced as a "confession of independence".
Beijing's defense ministry spokesman Wu Qian said on Friday that Lai "has seriously challenged the one-China principle... pushing our compatriots in Taiwan into a dangerous situation of war and danger".
