The United States shot down about 10 unmanned drones in Yemen that were preparing to attack targets, a US official said late Wednesday. The US military strike comes as escalating tensions in the Gaza war are spreading across the region.

The Houthi movement said early Wednesday that its naval forces carried out an operation targeting a "US merchant ship" in the Gulf of Aden, hours after they fired missiles at the US destroyer Gravely.
Attacks by Houthi rebels on shipping in the Red Sea have slowed trade between Asia and Europe and raised fears about global supply chains. World powers are concerned that the war in Gaza could devolve into a regional conflict.
President Joe Biden has said that attacks on Houthi targets will continue, although he acknowledged that the rebels may not stop their attacks.
The Israeli military operation in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip followed a bloody attack by Hamas militants in southern Israel on October 7 that killed 1,200 people and took more than 250 hostages. The Ministry of Health in Gaza says that around 27,000 people have been killed in fighting since the beginning of the conflict./VOA
