Iran has agreed to a secret arms deal with Russia worth 500 million euros, for the purchase of thousands of advanced mobile anti-aircraft missiles, the British newspaper Financial Times (FT) reported on Sunday.
The deal, reportedly signed in Moscow in December, sees Russia deliver 500 Verba-type portable launchers and 2,500 9M336 missiles within three years. The FT cites leaked Russian documents and people familiar with the deal.
The deliveries, according to documents cited by the FT, will be made in three installments, from 2027 to 2029.
The deal was negotiated by the Russian state arms exporter, Rosoboronexport, and the representative in Moscow of the Iranian Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics (MODAFL), the FT writes.
According to a contract seen by the newspaper, Tehran submitted a formal request for the systems in July of last year. In June of that year, US forces struck three of Iran's main nuclear facilities, while the country was embroiled in Israel's military campaign against Iran.
US President Donald Trump claimed that Iran's main nuclear facilities were destroyed in the attack. However, according to a preliminary US intelligence assessment at the time, the US airstrikes did not destroy Iran's nuclear capability, but only delayed it for several months. Iranian officials have repeatedly stated that the country has recovered from the damage suffered during the war and that its capabilities are stronger than before.
Russia and Iran have signed a strategic partnership treaty, which does not include a mutual defense clause. In early February, a Russian navy corvette conducted joint maneuvers with the Iranian navy in the Gulf of Oman, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.
