Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth has said that Iran's new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, is "wounded and disfigured."
He says Iran's factories have been "razed to the ground" and that the Pentagon has "done its part for now."
He adds that he believes there is now a chance for peace, but American troops involved in the conflict remain on standby.
The declaration of a two-week ceasefire for the time being means an end to the relentless US and Israeli attacks that have killed hundreds of Iranians.
In a statement published on the Truth Social platform, US President Donald J. Trump announced that he has agreed to a temporary suspension of attacks on Iran, linking this decision to diplomatic developments in the region.
Trump states that this decision comes after talks with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Pakistani military chief Asim Munir.
“Based on discussions with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, of Pakistan, and given that they requested that I stop the destructive force being sent tonight towards Iran, and provided that the Islamic Republic of Iran agrees to the FULL, IMMEDIATE and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack on Iran for a period of two weeks. This will be a bilateral CRUISE!
The reason for this is that we have already met and exceeded all military objectives, and are well ahead in reaching a final Agreement for long-term PEACE with Iran, as well as for PEACE in the Middle East.
We have received a 10-point proposal from Iran and believe it constitutes a workable basis for negotiations. Almost all of the various points of past disagreement have been agreed upon between the United States and Iran, but a two-week period will allow the Agreement to be finalized and concluded.
On behalf of the United States of America, as President, and also representing the countries of the Middle East, it is an honor that this long-standing problem is close to being resolved. Thank you for your attention to this issue!

According to this statement, a temporary ceasefire and ongoing negotiations could pave the way for a broader peace agreement in the region, including relations between the US and Iran, as well as stability in the Middle East.
