Iran's Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, is reportedly holed up in a secret location and maintaining minimal contact with the outside world, according to a CBS News report citing US intelligence sources.
Khamenei reportedly communicates only through a network of couriers set up specifically to avoid identifying his location. At the same time, Iranian officials involved in negotiations with the administration of US President Donald Trump are reportedly facing major communication difficulties within Iranian state structures, slowing down the progress of the talks.
American sources claim that any proposal coming from Washington takes considerable time to receive a response, as the information passes through several levels of security before reaching the Iranian supreme leader.
The report emphasizes that the increased security measures are related to fears of possible American or Israeli attacks on Iran's leadership. According to the same sources, many senior Iranian officials are staying in fortified bunkers and avoiding the use of electronic communications.
However, US officials have stated that Khamenei has given "in principle" approval to a possible framework agreement with the US, while the White House has signaled that a deal could be finalized within days.
