The US Secret Service is under fire for security breaches that put former President Donald Trump's life at risk, according to an article published by the Nypost. According to the report, the agency tasked with protecting the US leader has been accused of allowing dangerous situations during a public appearance by Trump, raising serious concerns about his safety and failings in top security protocols.
The incident that sparked controversy occurred in September at a dinner in Washington, where Trump was accompanied by senior officials, including the vice president, the secretary of defense, and the secretary of state. During the event at the restaurant where the meal was being served, protesters from the Code Pink organization approached the former president’s table and erupted in chants of “Free DC. Free Palestine” and inappropriate accusations against him. As can be seen in the video recordings of the event, some of the protesters were very close to Trump, despite the presence of security forces.
Critics, including Judicial Watch director Tom Fiton, have said Trump has been placed in “a potentially dangerous situation” due to a “serious lack of security protocols.” Fiton noted that the protesters appeared to have had advance information about the former president’s movements, raising the alarm that anyone with such information could pose a real threat to his life.
In his reactions, Fitton emphasized that Trump previously survived two assassination attempts during his 2024 election campaign, and while such attempts should prompt stricter security measures, he assessed that the Secret Service's operational blunders were not up to the task.
The case given as an example is that of the restaurant, where security agents apparently tried to manage the situation by communicating by radio while Trump sat near his table, but the protesters remained very close, shouting words against him in an environment with dangerous objects, including knives.
Amid the debate over its security, a lawsuit has been filed in federal court in Washington by Judicial Watch, seeking the release of internal Secret Service communications, including emails and messages between agents serving in the Presidential Protection Division, as well as any correspondence related to the organization Code Pink. The US government is accused of ignoring a deadline set by the Freedom of Information Act by failing to turn over the documents by the requested date.
Reactions against the Secret Service have been reinforced by other security figures, including former FBI Deputy Director Chris Swecker, who has described the incident as an "unacceptable security lapse" that resembles historical scenes when past leaders traveled without sufficient protective measures.
While the Secret Service has publicly stated that it implemented multiple layers of security and claims that none of the protesters or bystanders got dangerously close to Trump, the debate continues. Clashes over information management and presidential security protocols have become a new focus of criticism and concern, as former President Trump remains a central figure in American politics and a potential target for potential threats.
