Putin threatens full-scale offensive if no deal is reached
Russian President Vladimir Putin has made several harsh statements during a meeting with military commanders in the Central Military District of the Russian Army, further escalating rhetoric against Ukraine and warning of new offensives in the east of the country.
Putin welcomed the capture by Russian troops of the city of Hulyaipole, in the Zaporizhia region, calling it an important strategic victory that opens up opportunities for further advancement of Russian forces.
He emphasized that Hulyaipole is the second largest city in that region and the positions already taken create ground for new military operations.
The Russian president also mentioned the capture of Krasnoarmeysk and Dimitrov in the Donetsk region as steps that, according to him, "bring the complete liberation of the Donetsk People's Republic closer."
In another direct and threatening statement, Putin warned that if Ukraine does not agree to resolve the conflict peacefully, then Russia will end it with military force.
He accused Kiev of starting a "real war" , claiming that Moscow has always sought a peaceful solution, but that the Ukrainian authorities have chosen the path of escalation.
"If Kiev does not want to resolve the conflict peacefully, Russia will carry out the special military operation by force. The Kiev authorities preferred to start large-scale hostilities. A war. To start a war. We are trying to end it," he said.
Putin once again returned to the familiar Russian narrative about the origins of the war, claiming that it all started in 2014 with what he calls a "coup in Kiev" and the suppression of the rights of the Russian-speaking population in southeastern Ukraine.
According to him, Russia is engaged in an effort to end a war that it did not start itself, but was imposed by Ukraine's actions.
"The Kiev authorities chose to launch large-scale military operations. To start a war. We are trying to end it. From the very beginning, we said that the troops of the Kiev regime should withdraw from these territories. And that there would be no military actions. There would have been none if they had listened to us then," the Russian president declared.
Putin's statements come at a time when the situation on the front remains tense and when international diplomacy is increasingly skeptical about the possibility of a quick ceasefire.
His tones, especially threats of a military solution in the absence of dialogue, indicate that Moscow is preparing for a new phase of the offensive in Ukraine, while a resolution to the conflict still seems distant.
