Oleh Ivashchenko, the new head of the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine (SZRU), appointed by President Zelensky in March last year, in a detailed interview with the state-run agency "Ukrinform", revealed the Kremlin's long-term plans and gave an assessment of the risks that await Europe if Russia regroups militarily.
He stated that Russia's plans remain unchanged and that they are simply trying to buy time with the idea of peace talks in order to recover. Ivashchenko stressed that Putin is targeting all the countries of the former Soviet Union.
“ Russia’s strategic plans remain unchanged, it seeks complete control over our territory. They are technologically, economically and diplomatically exhausted. They are trying to buy time to reorganize, but this does not guarantee peace. In the Kremlin’s logic, this is a war to revive the Soviet Union. According to our estimates, the immediate goal is to take full control of the Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhia and Kherson regions. The long-term goal is to restore influence over all the countries of the former USSR ,” he said.
The Ukrainian Intelligence Chief provided further details about what he called the "Kaliningrad Plan," which he said aims to attack the Baltic states.
"The Russian scenario involves a fabricated crisis in Kaliningrad or Belarus, to justify military intervention. The Armored Corps and the Army are prepared to penetrate the Suwałki Corridor and threaten the Baltic states ," Ivashchenko added.
Ivashchenko further said that Ukraine was fighting not only for its own survival, but also for Europe. He stated that if sanctions were lifted, Russia would need 2-4 years to rearm and attack Europe.
"Ukraine is not just fighting for its survival, we are the shield of Europe. We are holding the front line and giving the West time to prepare. If the war stops, Russia will need 2 to 4 years to rebuild its military power. If sanctions are lifted, rearmament will accelerate and Russia will be ready for aggression against Europe. The construction of a new military district in Leningrad, with new military bases up to the Kola Peninsula and the border with Finland, is the clearest signal that they are preparing for the offensive, not for defense ," he said, among other things.
