The United States is considering a proposal to impose 500% tariffs on imports from countries that continue to buy Russian energy resources, such as oil, natural gas and uranium, in an effort to increase economic pressure on Russia over its ongoing war in Ukraine.
According to reports from Bloomberg and The Hill, this proposal, led by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and supported by a bipartisan group of 50 senators, aims to punish countries like China, India and Iran, which continue energy trade with Moscow, making it more costly for them to support the Russian economy.
The proposal comes at a time when Russian aggression against Ukraine has escalated global tensions, increasing domestic pressure on President Donald Trump's administration to enact new sanctions against Russia. The proposed package also includes a ban on American citizens from buying Russian government debt, aimed at further financially isolating Moscow. Senators Graham and Richard Blumenthal have stressed that these measures could be activated immediately by presidential order and enjoy broad support in the Senate, potentially enough to overcome a presidential veto.
On the other hand, critics warn that such a high tax could have far-reaching consequences for global economies, raising energy and commodity prices in affected countries, including those dependent on Russian imports. In the context of the protracted conflict in Ukraine, this measure reflects a new US strategy to use economic leverage to promote peace negotiations, but risks complicating relations with some allied or neutral states.
Meanwhile, Ukraine continues to face intense Russian attacks, with reports of civilian casualties and extensive infrastructure damage, while Kiev seeks more military and financial support from the West to resist Russian aggression.
