Europe prepares trade response to Trump's threats

Europe is preparing for a strong trade response to US President Donald Trump's threats to impose tariffs on several European countries. The White House has proposed 10% tariffs starting February 1 on eight European countries that have sent troops to Greenland.

In response, European capitals are considering retaliatory measures, including imposing counter-tariffs on US products worth up to 93 billion euros, or restricting access for US companies to the European market.

According to international media, these measures are designed to give European leaders more influence ahead of their meetings with President Trump at the World Economic Forum in Davos, which takes place this week.

Donald Trump is expected to meet several European leaders, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, in the Swiss city on Monday afternoon. The meeting was initially scheduled to focus on the war in Ukraine, but the agenda has been revised to prioritize the Greenland crisis.

European officials hope that threats of trade retaliation will increase political pressure within the United States and push Trump to back down from plans to impose tariffs.
